Rewards and prizes are essential to the resource list of any school librarian who is focused on building an interest in reading and a passion for books.
When generating interest in books, reading and the school library, we have experienced a lot of success with using on-going competitions.
Of course, if you are running competitions then prizes are essential. We always strive to add books to our giveaways to maintain the focus on books, and promote the idea of reading for pleasure.
We have also had great success with reading related badges, bookmarks, reading lamps and other book related prizes.
Rewards for loyalty, although smaller than the large competition winners prizes also work well. After all, when generating an interest in reading, rewarding those regular readers with a small token of appreciation is guaranteed to get the other children talking about the library, and keep those regular readers coming back for more.
