A fabulous addition to our school library, at Librarianstale The Reading Game from Carel Press.
Choose 8 genre cards, set those out on tables along with 4 or 5 library books from each genre. The children then are divided into groups of between 3-5 and given an Explorer map.
They then visit each table in their group and after discussion choose the book with the best cover, the best blurb and the best start (each group has to read the opening paragraph of each group and decide the best).
I recently played this with our year 5 class and had a wonderful afternoon: so much ‘book talk’ it was amazing. After the game all the children had 2 or 3 choices that they would like to read – all of which were different from their usual genre choices!
