We have always had a reading buddy system at our school. Where children from year 6 go to Reception class and read to and listen to readers. It came to light that some children were not confident with this role and felt they could do better.
This academic year the children who want to be part of the reading buddy scheme will have an afternoon of training before they begin. With the help of some National Literacy Trust Resources I will be helping the children to build their confidence in participating in the reading buddy scheme. The prompt cards available for the children are a great addition as a reminder of their role.
The importance of the younger children having reading role models has been researched on many occasions; all of which show how beneficial they are.
After training the children will receive a certificate and a reading buddy badge during a praise assembly, to highlight the importance of the role. I intend to evaluate the success after each half term with training opportunities at different points in the year, to allow those interested to join.
