Many will remember their first story books as Ladybird Well Loved Tales; Cinderella, Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Gretel etc, which are bringing a fair price now especially if you have the originals.
We didn’t have the plethora of picture books available to today’s early readers. In my experience many children arrive at school without knowing traditional tales which we take for granted they know but is this because they haven’t been read to? Or is it because there are so many picture books to choose from which offer so many rich illustrations and great rhymes?
Traditional tales do have their place and I don’t think a library should be without them. That’s why I’m so glad we invested in two sets of the Ladybird Tales Classic Collection containing 24 of the well-loved classic fairy-tales. They offer easy reading to children still learning but also have enough appeal for those who can read but want the satisfaction of reading a story themselves. It was well worth the investment because the author, credited with retelling the stories Vera Southgate, is once again in the year end top 3 authors borrowed.
