Book Trust Children’s Book Week – http://www.booktrust.org.uk/books/children/childrens-book-week/
This changed from the autumn term to the summer term last year and is recognised by our school each year.
We don’t need much of an excuse to celebrate books at Sacred Heart so the opportunity for a whole week of celebrations fills me with delight!
Resources are available from the link above, along with ideas to assist the celebrations. There is also a whole pack of illustrations in search of a story by Children’s Laureate, Chris Riddell.
This is the perfect opportunity to hold a book sale of withdrawn books and comics from our school library – it gives us chance to provide summer reading at a heavily discounted price and the children love a bargain!!
Activities to be held during this week will include Library Lunches (a story with a related activity and light snacks, cakes), Book quiz for the juniors and Guess who quiz for the infants. Back by popular demand ‘Scene It’ this is where I choose 10 illustrations from well known stories and place them around the school, the children have to decide which story the illustration is from and write it on a sheet, the one with the most correct wins a prize. For this I try to source books which may tell a well known story but is illustrated quite differently, the children love it and always ask for this activity.
At the end of the week to finish our celebrations we will be holding a Teddy Bear’s Picnic for the infants and a ‘Famous Five’ picnic for the juniors – both of which will include stories and activities followed by lots of treats, can’t wait!
The Best Book Guide 2015 will also be published this week so you can check how many you’ve read.
