The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman

I was intrigued to read this book simply because it was written by Neil Gaiman.  However I have to admit that the cover just drew me to it – a ghostly dust cover, of thorns and black roses wraps around the sleeping ‘beauty’ and the illustrations within are simply breath taking; Chris Riddell, Children’s Laureate, at his best!

sleeper 1The detail of every illustration is fantastic and depicts the story so well.  This illustrates the sleepers chasing the runaway queen.

Not all is as it seems in the story; as you would expect from Neil Gaiman, with the twist at the end being very thought provoking and not in the Disney style at all!

I loved the twist on the ‘fairytale’ but the illustrations really made it for me.
